Capturing Coastal Drama - Shooting into the Light

Saturday 06 June
Porthtowan - 9:30am - 3 Hours
Caleb Williams
Learn how to master light and shadow while photographing dramatic coastal scenes around the beautiful beach village of Porthtowan, on the north coast of Cornwall. 'Contre jour', is a French phrase which means 'shooting into the light'. This workshop will help you capture rugged coastal scenes, silhouettes and reflections by the sea. Working in manual mode you will learn how to expose correctly for the most impactful results. Shooting 'into the light', creates memorable, artistic results. The resulting images can be enjoyed either in black & white or colour. Depending on tide and weather we will spend most of our time on the beach or exploring the cliffs above.

It was a great event. I learnt the technique on how to produce a misty effect with water shots. And how to frame compositions, Caleb was friendly and broke things down to my level.

Lovely, friendly group of like minded people, all keen to add to their knowledge. Caleb's instruction and explanations were easily understood in layman's language and I think we all left with a clearer understanding of our various bits of kit and where we could and would improve :-)

Caleb clearly has a passion for photography, his knowledge was clear from the start. I really enjoyed the hands on approach to the session, brief chats with all required info then off to see what you can achieve. Caleb made himself available for anyone wishing to ask advice or seek feedback, also taking time to review each of our photos to give advice on improving the shots and praise where he thought it was warranted...all in all a very positive session, walking away feeling much more comfortable with my new camera.

I am new to astro photography so when a friend suggested a shoot down in West Cornwall I jumped at the chance. There was so much subject choice if was difficult to choose but the twin ruined engine houses being one of all time favourite locations to photograph simply had to be attempted under the stars! I left my friend who was doing a star trail at West Wheal Owles and made my way down to the Crowns. I wanted the milky way to be in the frame so I set up and passed the time drinking hot coffee w
