Winter Light Photography

Winter Light Photography

Saturday 06 December
Truro - St George's Rd. - 11am - 3 Hours
Caleb Williams
Nature has something to offer in every season. In the winter its the stark poetry of trees, the soft light, and the atmospheric shapes of clouds. Winter allows us to compose our images thoughtfully. Shadows and glimmers, the mulch of fallen leaves, the texture of a bare branch: all these things can become strong compositions. This workshop will provide deeper understanding of aperture, iso and shutter speed as we experiment with different styles of shooting. We will create a landscape 'story' - composed from still-life and large ensemble elements. Come and enjoy a photography walk in crisp winter air and experience this magical season in the park.

I thought Caleb was very helpful and delivered his knowledge very well, getting us to practice on good subjects. He was very helpful and gave clear instructions. I am now able to practice easily on my own. I look forward to learning more.

Really good session with Caleb looking at outdoor portraiture. By the end of the 3 hours I had a far greater understanding of how to use the manual settings on my camera to get the effect I wanted. I?ve been interested in portraiture for a while but this class has really helped me to understand and appreciate what makes a good portrait, how to get the lighting right etc. Thank you to Caleb. This was my second class and I will look out for more. An extremely enjoyable 3 hours.

A very enjoyable session. I learnt a lot and it all made sense! Caleb set tasks that were fun to do and gave great constructive feedback. It was a small group which made it easy to ask questions and get individual attention and feed back. The 3 hours flew by . Enjoyed it so much I?ve signed up for another session!

Caleb was a wonderful tutor, explained the tasks in hand and was available for any questions as well as checking in with us to ensure that we were getting the most out of each task. The round up at the end of each task was also useful. I will be booking another workshop and sharing details with fellow togs.

Planned image for August for Milky Way positioning planned around the new moon and a favourite composition where the Milky Way lines up with the harbour opening. Much planning for this composition. Image includes 12 stacked sky images (settings, ISO3200, WB 4200k, 20mm focal length at f2 and shutter speed of 10 secs). Four foreground shots, stopped down to f5.6, light painted. Most importantly, I love being out at night under clear skies!

So far, spring has been a wash out, but I actually love the moody tones of a gloomy day at the beach. Easter Sunday was the magical coming together of the weather and good surf. Porthtowan is my local beach and I've been taking photos of the surfers there for a couple of years, so when the elements aligned I headed down there and managed to hit the light just right for this photo.

After all my phone apps went crazy and up in to red alert it was a mad dash to try to capture the Northern Lights over the North Cornwall Coast, after completely failing last time! I'd just done a sunset shoot when i saw the alerts, and only had time to grab a sandwich and forego the usual and necessary 'shoot flask' as it was a drive out and trudge along one of Cornwall's muddiest coastal paths in pitch dark, to reach a spot that would include the famous Rumps' Sea Dragon as foreground interest

Title or Location: Overlooking Falmouth Docks, from Castle Drive
That night I was going into Falmouth and decided to take my camera and ride around on my bike and look for some interesting spots. I went up to a point overlooking the docks. I loved the lights and cranes and wanted to try and capture that. I didn't have a tripod so had hold my camera pressed tight against some railings to keep it stable. I used a 1sec shutter speed to keep my ISO low (500iso) and stopped down to f/5 to try and get everything in focus.

I met young Miles at Ellis Square while he was doing some rather gymnastic break dancing. Luckily, for me, I was using my Nikon Z7 which allowed me to switch from raw to jpeg giving me 9 frames per second on motor drive. I was shooting aperture preferred and used f/8 the resulting shutter speed was 1/1600 of a second. 9fps sounds fast but I only had 6 nicely composed shots out of 120 exposures.

I had spent the better part of the day moving silently through the edges of the chase looking to photograph deer. It was one of those days that seemed perfect on paper: overcast skies that softened the light, barely a breath of wind, and a camera battery at full charge. But nature is nothing if not humbling. The deer remained ghost-like, unseen despite hours of quiet patience and soft steps.By late afternoon my hopes had dimmed so I began the slow walk back to the car. The path wound through
